great presentation, our advice would be to elaborate more on the programs that google has bought, such as you tube and baidu, so we can see in what other areas and programs google is spreading to. Also, you could go into mroe specifics about google, such as how many hits they get a day or other statistics about the actual website to show just how powerful and popular it is.

We think that it's awesome how you guys discussed do much in depth stuff about Google, but we also think you guys drifted away from your primary focus because you ask (rhetorically) if Google is too powerful, yet the presentation doesn't really explain how they allocate that power, where they exercise it, etc...
Also, Think about the Internet; it is a worldwide thing.. Maybe if you compared Google to other major companies you could explain how "gentle" Google is compared to other Co.s. right now and in the verbal presentation it seemed this group stated that the CEO(s) of Google did no harm because "they were too rich" and they dont need to take control of the web, but what if they did? what could be the effects, and what laws restrict them from becoming too powerful at this point? In addition, think about the older times in America when Rockefeller had all the oil, or another parallel that demonstrates something like a Monopoly.. Do you think Google is getting close to forming a Monopoly? after all, it IS buying out a lot of small tech companies.. could that be a sign? |

We really think that you guys hit on much of what there is to talk about. All of the great effects that google has are shown and we can't really think of much else to add to that, but we think that maybe a counter to the benefits might be helpful and kind of show what could happen from being to powerful or perhaps some things that are not beneficial to everyday people or other web companies.

The idea about google being so powerful is really interesting becasue it is such a force. When I want to find anyhting online, I automatically go straight to google for a database. What else is out there on the internet, and how did people search fro information before google came about? I think it would be interesting if you guys consucted a survey, (or found one online ) of people who use google as their first resource. I bet it would be crazy to see just how much it is actually used. Again, the idea is a great one and very interesting; can't wait to see you guys elaborate more. Also, the funny/clever pictures are a nice touch. Try this website to learn a little more about what there was before google.

Good job so far with your project. We just have a couple suggestions for you. You may want to go more in depth with explaining grand central and you tube and why or why not these acquisitions are contributing to Google’s popularity. You may want to consider how Google is able to replicate Microsoft programs like excel and does their ability to do this give them the opportunity to possibly rival with Microsoft? Also, how do Google’s searches work that make them so effective and therefore contribute to the sites popularity? I would have to agree with the past couple comments and say that you also might want to explore Google’s workplace? Why is it such a great place to work for? Google features plenty of ammentities such as chefs, dry cleaners, and even a barber shop. Are these features what attracts some of the smartest people in the country to go to work there? You may also want to look at Google’s social responsibility such as supporting hybrid cars by offering $5,000 to any employee who purchases one. Some good information can be found on this link:

I like Professor McGonagle's notion of exploring the reasons that Google is considered such a great company to work for. I often hear news stories that focus on this aspect of Google as a company. I found a number of websites that should help you out in researching this subject.
http://www.google.com/intl/en/jobs/ - Google's own job page. Discusses a wide range of topics such as getting a job, life as a google employee, and benefits that the company offers. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/12/18/GOOGLE.TMP - An article that discusses how Google recruits the smartest students across the country, as well as some of the insane benefits that google offers such as a free cafeteria, free laundry service, and annual trips to the Sierra. http://www.prweaver.com/blog/2005/04/13/175-working-at-google-fun - A video produced by google that highlights some of the reasons why working at google is entertaining and fun. I hope these resources are of some use, good luck on your final project. |

Hello Group #3,
Your presentation title asks if Google is "too" powerful. "Too" powerful compared to what? Who does Google compete with? Why are you conscerned about Google's power? What would they have to do to make us concerned? Has Google ever done anything concerning, particularly with represive governments in Asia? Your mid-semester presentation focused on Google as a story. Who, what, when, where, why, and how of Google. This makes, an excellent topic. Google plays a very important part in our lives, especially college students lives. What are some ways to make Google better? How can you become a better searcher? Are there any search strategies that you can teach your fellow students. Who are Google's competitors. Who are some other important search engines? How are they different from Google. What is different about Yahoo, mahalo, ask.com, clusty, seeqpod.com. Are there any other types of serach? One that you should look into is enterprise search. There is an excellent search company in Needham, called Fast Search and Transfer. What do they do? How is it different, than searching "the Internet" with google. Can you use google to search for our class on Blackboard? Can I use google to search for all the grades so far in our class? How about the deed to a house? How would you find that? It is a public record. Can google find it? Why or why not. What about Desktop Search? How does that work? What about Google as a company? They are considered one of the best places to work in the world. Why? Do they do business differently? There are plenty of places that "do business differently" what does Google Do that is so great? How are you going to become an expert at Google, the company and its products? What are you going to teach your fellow students. What can you do with Google Earth? What can you do with Google Videos? Spreadsheets and Documents? |

We find it interesting the idea of google as a gentle giant. But we would like to see you go into a deeper meaning of why google can be seen as a threat. Also we are interested ina deeper explanation of the different sources that they have to offer. It would also be a good idea to include the igoogle aplications that are the same as those of microsof yet they are free. See how that make them a threat to microsoft or how those aplication can be good to society.

Our group liked your focus on the current and past acquisitions of the company. One thing that we found confusing but still interesting was the GrandCentral application. This application should be focused on more in depth in order to give the rest of us a smooth understanding of it. One thing that we thought was confusing about your presentation was the fact that you were focusing on all of googles acquisitions and discussing what they were, but not how it applied to them being powerful. We realize your argument is that google is not too powerful, but it would be interesting if you connected the power of grand central controlling people's phone internet and mail to an increase in global power and control. Overall the presentation was very interesting, the focus just needs to be more defined.

We thought you provided a lot information on the different devices google has to offer but you said it isn't harmful because it is free even though it owns 50.8% of internet sources. Try talking about how people have different web servers to use to search the internet and google isn't forced to be used so it isn't harmful to support your argument.

sorry! my last post was suppose to be for a different group.
i think your topic is really really interesting. and different from the others we have seen so far. The question of whether or not google is getting to big is a very big controversy. try looking on the bentley library page to find new york times articles that talk about whether or not google is too big. |

great info on P2P..had a lot of supporting facts. when you talked about legitimate and illegitimate sources of downloading info…relate that to your project and how you will use it. Gives a lot of important info but doesnt always relate back to topic.
