News of the Information AgeThis is a featured page

The definition of news and the way news is heard and absorbed has been changed by what we call the “Information Age” that we live in. This age is defined by the increase of technology use to enhance how we perform many of our daily functions. The daily function that might be affected the most is the way that we get news and the definition of what news is. Many people now will not turn on the television to observe the day’s news; instead they will search on Google or other websites that broadcast news. In the new world, people demand news when and where they want it and that is done through the Internet. Technology has changed the news as a business because many people are predicting the downfall of many large news companies. Who would have thought that in a decade or so that they Los Angeles Times may go under? Or the New York Times will be out of print? That is what technology has done to our society. We will no longer need to have paperboys deliver our paper because it will be a click away online. We will no longer need to have classified ads in the paper because you can go on Craig’s List to get things. You can turn to EBay or other places to purchase necessary items. Instead of editorials, people will turn to blogs or podcasting. There is no longer a need to write to a paper when you can go online and voice your opinion instantly. Technology has taken away the ways in which the paper in print used to profit. That being said the newspapers must adapt and make sure their stories are online. The impact that this will have on our society to me seems somewhat minimal. There may be a loss in jobs but the writers will still write the articles online. The delivery boy routes will become extinct but that is relatively minimal. People already turn to the Internet for many things so I believe putting the news on the Internet is actually more convenient. It will make the news more accessible and will fit the demands of our high speed culture. I believe that it will be an adaptation by the news business and not a complete change in society. Our generation lends itself to having the news online so that people can access it whenever wherever.

I agree that having the news available online is almost necessary in this day and age, but I do also believe that it should not be the only source and that there will still be a demand for actually newspapers. I agree with the comment above in the sense that it will be extremely difficult to decide what is factual and what is not.

I think that you make a good point by saying that having news online is convenient because it truely does make many of our lives easier. I do think, however, that the internet should not be our only source of news. It is very easy to post news online on independent websites without verifying sources. I believe by having large news corporations the news will be more honest because someone will be held accountable. Without accountability on the internet it may be very hard to distinguish fact from fiction.
