A new age of information sharing has developed itself thanks to the innovation of the internet. More and more people want their information faster and directly to them. Traditional newspapers and TV channels are losing ground to internet blogs and independent broadcastings. Up to this day the news plays an important role in our society. News makes us better informed so that we can make the right choices in society and know more about the world we live in. The news is an informative business, but it is a very profitable one too, especially thanks to advertising. TV Channels make money by selling airtime to whoever wants to buy it and advertize their product or service. Therefore all the networks have come to care about are their ratings rather than the quality of their programming. There is a new trend to show what the public wants and not what is healthy. This is one of the reasons why people have lost faith in the news and are turning to other mediums such as blogs to get their news. Blogs are best described as just people talking. There is the advantage that they can be written by anyone, anywhere at any given time. We are witnessing that the very definition of journalism has been modified. Nowadays anyone with a computer and the internet can report the news. Some identify that blogs are acts of Journalism if the writer chooses to adopt the same standards as a journalist. Others criticize blogs as recycled information since they are reactions to things that have already been reported somewhere else. News networks such as MSNBC and CNN are trying to shift to the internet in order to survive the change to the digital age. Newspapers are moving towards local coverage, reporting only local news, the effect is called hyperlocalism. Only a small number of newspapers are left standing. As we enter the digital age where we can get news with two clicks on our laptop computers, we notice the concept of news has broadened. As a society we are given more resources for information thanks to technology improvement. But we also filter only the information we want to hear. Therefore there is a real threat to our society and our democratic system.

posting utube videos on ppt

go to http://vixy.net/ and enter in the URL of the Youtube video that you want to convert
click convert to a .AVI file for windows
then save it
then use RIVA to convert the file from an AVI file to an MPG file.
then click on the powerpoint and click insert video
-Tom D'Eri

News War By Amilton Pires

PBS’s Frontline, had a very interesting view of what the news industry position in the world today is and how it has changes over time. News is not what is once at one time. As the program discussed major news programming has broadened their interests. The issues that have been making headline news are definitely different from what older journalist would consider being of any significance. In attempts to increase ratings and profits news programs have succumb to questionable stories, such as issues of students and single mothers working as strips. Although this may be a reoccurring trend in our society I don’t consider this topic to stimulate my interest as news on U.S. troops in Iraq would. News should be information that that have some sort of impact on the lives of the individuals who pay attention to what is going on. Newspapers and TV news companies have reached a point where they are not completing their initial purpose, which is to well inform the people of facts that matter to them as a society. They have become more concerned with the amount of profit that is generated through the distribution of information. Frontline displayed the examples of useless news being broadcasted by ABC News and printed in the Los Angeles Times, which were at one time resources trusted by many Americans. The wave in new technology has been a big influence in this trend. Advertising dollars have been making its way to major internet news resources such as Yahoo. Although these new media outlets do oppose a threat to TV news and newspapers, this is no reason for any newspaper or TV news program to produce worthless news. What is the winner in any kind of media is originality in the news. Whoever is the first to get the news has the advantage. And that’s the way it should be. I understand the journalism is a business; however, the news companies shouldn’t put profit in front of their initial purpose. Technology has always been changing and it will continue to change. If profit is what these companies are worried about maybe they should venture in to the new sphere, the internet.

New Age News

Brian Tracy Prof. McGonagle IT101-013

New Age News

The age of webcasting, podcasting, blogs, and citizen journalism has brought rise to a new media outlet, the internet and its vast subscribers. However, this rise of the internet as a media outlet may also be causing the downfall of the conventional media outlets such as newspapers and television. Along with this rise of this new media outlet there has been a overwhelming change in new standards of news and the type of content that is distributed. The real question that needs to be answered from all of this, is whether this will allow our country and American democracy as we know it to remain the same, or will it eventually destroy our country’s strength from the inside out.

Beginning with the rise of the internet as a new media outlet, the American public has become exposed to an amazing amount of news, ideas, and thoughts, at lightning speeds. The only problem with all of this is that because the American public has responded so positively to this new outlet, the conventional outlets have had to respond as well. It seems as if today the standard of journalism and reporting has changed immensely due to the fact that more and more Americans find sensational stories and entertainment news so appealing.

Some believe that this standard hasn’t changed, it has simply become better. David Westin, the president of ABC News states in News War that, “the standard has not changed…it has broadened”. He goes on to say that news has, “changed because there are a wide number of outlets”. Obviously Westin has trouble making himself clear but what one can take from his statements is that conventional news outlets are certainly responding to the growing number of outlets.

Many also believe that the standards have certainly changed and for the worse, when it comes to conventional news. Ted Koppel a respected journalist, believes that journalism is being judged “by the same standards that we apply to entertainment”. This is a shocking statement when one analyzes the implications that this truly has on our society today. In the same way that we judge if a movie is good or television show is entertaining, is the same way that America is beginning to judge news. And what does this mean to news execs? Well for some it means increasing the sex appeal in stories, focusing more and more on celebrity sleaze, and focusing less on what really matters.

Due to the way in which the internet has turned so many away from scheduled news programs and attracted them to on demand news stories and fast information, conventional news has had to change not only their style and their content, but the way they do business as well. This has led to news corporations turning to their enemy, the internet, and taking advantage of what could potentially be they’re downfall. Even though it may seem that the internet is ruining news and will eventually drive conventional media outlets into the ground, there is hope. For example, news programs have created blogs and web programs in order to make their news more accessible to those hooked to the internet and to reach a younger audience. When it comes to news as a business, the internet should be looked at as a great business venture. No longer should the news corporations view the internet as a threat, but as an opportunity for success and growth.

In conclusion, while news is changing due to competition from the internet, and the topics of news may become less important, I do believe there is hope. If conventional news corporations can effectively utilize the internet to reach more audiences than competition will no longer exist to the degree that it is now. This will result in higher standards and a return to glory days of news.

News Wars by Lindsay

The message put forth in News Wars does not surprise me. With the stresses and hassles of daily life who truly has time to sit and read a full newspaper each day. Even when people do have time to relax and watch television they normally do not want to be bothered with an hour long monotonous news cast. For these reasons news is diverting away from its original version to become a form of on demand entertainment which is made possible by technology.

Increased use of the internet is the largest factor towards the changing news industry. Instead of buying a newspaper every morning consumers can just as easily go onto the internet and read the news that interests them. If consumers like watching newscasts instead of reading them, videos can be downloaded daily and watched at the consumer’s convenience much like having a DVR or Ti-Vo. Large news company’s such as MSNBC are now turning towards online news casting to reach a broader audience. Besides large corporations, small private companies along with individual entities post their version of the news on the web for everyone to see.

This diversity in the news is causing large corporations to find different ways to please their customer and turn a profit. These different ways include making the news more entertaining to be watched. This causes news programs to steer away from real news and more towards investigative pieces that people will find interesting such as “How to Catch a Predator”. One of the most popular news shows is Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” which consists of humorous takes on “normal” daily news. When a comedy show is considered one of the most popular news shows it changes the quality of editorial content. Large and small news corporations alike care less about the quality of editorial content and more towards their ratings and profits. Editorial content is also put in great jeopardy by individual entities posting “news” without the need for editing or confirmation that their posting is truly factual.

This could have a great impact on our culture and society. People are not necessarily getting the news that is important to them. They may not even be getting news that is factual. In order to get the news people want and need they normally need to turn to online news. This is changing American culture because people will no longer need to read the newspaper each morning or watch the news each evening. This deviation away from print and television news will cause people to stop seeing all the news and let them just watch or read the news that matters to them. If you don’t wish to hear about the war in Iraq you can easily go online for your news and avoid articles related to it. While this may seem convenient it may ultimately cause the American population to be less informed as a whole and having an uniformed population can have serious ramifications.

News War by. This is the argument that News War deals with. As technology grows and expands, the news industry does as well. One of the main aspects that technology has brought to the media is that it has made news and information much more accessible. From blogs, online news programs, news alerts delivered right to your cell phone, one could receive new information about the world around them with a simple click of a button from wherever they might be. The reason this has happened is that as technology changes, the audience is changing as well. Jeff Fager from 60 minutes states that “Broadcast journalism is going to end up on the internet, but it has to go there. You don’t see anybody between 20 and 30 getting there news from the evening news, you see them getting it online “. As the news starts to branch out even more, people are more in command of when and where they want their information. There have obviously been great advancements that have been and are still being made in the world of news and media due to the developments in technology.
